Schools in Bedford Borough Council – Communication Champions

Every mainstream primary school in Bedford Borough has an opportunity to attend Communication Champion training and create a ‘Communication Champion team’. A Communication Champion team consists of three members of staff, usually the SENCo (or member of senior leadership), a Teacher and a Teaching Assistant, who are able to demonstrate an enhanced knowledge of or a specialist interest in Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). Upon completion of Communication Champion training, these members of staff are recognised as ‘Communication Champions’ who can then promote Speech, Language and Communication development for ALL pupils within their schools, by sharing and implementing the knowledge, skills and tools that they learn from the training with other members of staff.

85% of primary schools in Bedford Borough have accessed this training and there are over 115 Communication Champions in the borough!

The training is written for staff supporting children and young people with SLCN in schools. It equips them with innovative tools and methods to enhance children and young people’s (CYP) learning in the classroom and promotes quality first teaching. The training uses relevant teaching methods including practical activities, videos and group discussion to engage learners.

By attending this course you will:

  • Be able to identify which pupils have SLCN
  • Have increased knowledge to support pupils with SLCN
  • Be able to recognise when further support is required
  • Act as a point of contact for your colleagues, for Speech and Language Therapists, for parents etc, by championing Speech, Language and Communication
